JUST A CHANCE!

                            CHAPTER SIX!

                               PAY  BACK!

After the last party incident, where I left without informing my parents, I thought I was free only to realize that there's time for everything. A time to reap what you sow.
Everything was moving smoothly, fine and perfect till one particular morning. I planned going out with my friends, to the basketball court to complete our game, after which we would hang out at a particular joint we chose. I had told my parents about the game but they didn't refuse or agree.

That morning, after breakfast and chores I reminded my dad. He asked me to go to my mom since he didn't have enough time to talk then he left for work.
I was so happy, gosh! What a memorable day it would be. I went to meet my mom in the kitchen.
              "Mom"
"Yes, help me with the dishes, will you?
I did as requested and within few minutes I was through with the task. I wanted to hit the nail at the head, BOOM! Her phone buzzed, she picked it up and spent almost an hour. I felt like strangling the receiver at the other end.
Finally, the forever call ended and it was time for me to tell my story.

"Mom, remember the basketball game I told you about a week ago?
"Of course I remember, what's the news update this time?
"Well, uhm it's today actually. I met dad already about it but he asked me to meet you".
           "Oh I see".
I waited for her to say something but she said nothing at all. I repeated myself but she feigned deaf ears. Trying to draw her attention, I hit the rack and some plates fell and shattered. This is what I call DESTINY CHANGE 😭.
I stood transfixed, shocked at what just happened. Mom stopped what she was doing and looked at the plates. I froze!
           "Da-vid" she said
Whenever she said my name like that (instead of Dave) I know I'm in real big trouble.
            "Yes Mom" I shivered.
"Go to your room and don't come out till I tell you to do so" she said though angrily.
Trembling and scared as I was, I did immediately as I was told. I went to my room, locked the door and lay on my bed, waiting to be called upon, at least to the judgement court.
I woke up some hours later and checked the time. I was shocked, it was few minutes past 9 pm! 😲. First of all, I had overslept, like I'd never did ever. Secondly, I just realized that I've missed the game, thirdly, mom didn't bother waking me up for dinner or maybe she did and I was too sleepy to respond, poor me! I got up, went to my fridge, took a cup of milk, couple of bread which I buttered and  ate. Then I went back to sleep. The next time I woke up, I checked the time and it was past 8am. I jumped off my bed and went down stairs.
I saw Maya on the sofa, Suina was in the dinning room. I looked around, perhaps looking for someone in particular, you know what I mean.
"Maya, uhm, where's mom and dad" I asked curiously.
"Mom went somewhere and that place is a room, in the room there's a table, a chair, a cushion, a fridge, what else is there" she replied rather mockingly.
Note: she was only trying to tell me that mom left for work already, but you know, they always use every opportunity they get to frustrate me.
             "What about dad".
             "Well, he...."
             "Don't worry, never mind"
I cut in immediately, not ready for the show she was about to act. I went straight to the kitchen, washed my hands ready to prepare my breakfast.
Don't be marveled, I am a very good cook. That was a task mom didn't fail to introduce us to which we also learnt with ease. She did that even though I was a boy. Gender discrimination wasn't accepted in my house. Mom's logic was , "As far as you eat, the kitchen is definitely meant for you".
I fried eggs, toasted the bread, added a touch of strawberry jam and prepared the beverage to my taste. I was about to eat when Maya burst in and screamed. I almost dropped the tea, if not I was a little more cautious.
"Why screaming your breath out Maya? I asked furiously.
"Mom said, no eggs no toasted bread"
" You've got to be kidding me"
"Alright then, go on and eat, but bear the consequences" she replied.
She seemed serious and I had to respect my upcoming beards.
"Then what will I eat, if that's the case" I asked
"Just fix noodles, I think it's better, mom said no eggs".
I did as was told. I prepared the noodles. I couldn't find pepper, tomatoes, cabbage or even carrots. I was totally perplexed. I had to cook it all white just like that. I kept wondering how and where it disappeared to or am I in wonderland!
After my breakfast, I washed the plates and tidied up the kitchen, then went to my room. I decided to call Teny at least to apologise for not making it to the game. My phone wasn't there. That was when it struck me. My laptop, my video games was no where to be found. My TV set was disconnected. Then I had a flashback on the plates incident. It dawned on me that nothing was so easy. I didn't know what to do, I just lay on my bed in thoughts.
I heard my name, then I realized I had fallen asleep a while ago and it was noon already. How time flies.
I got up and went downstairs, it was mom calling from the kitchen. She wasn't supposed to be back now, I thought.
"Good afternoon mom" I greeted from afar not daring to go near her.
         "Dave, how was your sleep?
" Crazy, it was just crazy"
         "Did I hear you clearly?
Then it struck me, no foul languages.
"It was fine mom, that was a slip of tongue".
         "It better be"
         "Yes Mom".
I helped her with the dishes and the cooking. After that I set the table.
After lunch, mom called me and told me that I've been grounded but just for a week. When I asked the reason, she told me that it was the punishment for leaving the house without permission. I tried to remember when. Then she reminded me of Teny's party. Gosh! My parents are amazing.
           "Just a week, I said"
" Yes, starting from today" she replied.
           " What about the plates?
           "We'll get back to you".
           "What?
"Yes, next time treat every little detail with delicate care".
She stressed the delicate to catch my attention.
"Alright then. That reminds me, what about the reason you asked us not to eat eggs and toasted bread".
             "Did I? I never did".
             "Maya said so"
I called Maya to verify what she had told me earlier. Guess what she told me.
" Yes, I told you mom said, no eggs no toasted bread".
"That's right mom, that's what she told me" I defended.
"Maya, did I say such? Mom asked.
"Dave, I just told you, mom said no eggs, no toasted bread, I didn't tell you she said we shouldn't eat. Mom told us a story about a man who didn't eat eggs and toasted bread, so when he's been attended to in any restaurant, he'll reply no eggs no toasted bread". Maya said laughing uncontrollably.
She had played a trick on me, I caught my mom laughing at me, though she tried to hide it, I felt like crying though.  My breakfast was comfortably in their tummy. They caught me this time. I fell flat to their trap. No wonder mom and dad refused to give me an answer, they had plans already. Indeed, PAYBACK IS REAL!
