VOICES UNHEARD

 CHAPTER FIVE

Anna was home, as she didn't go to work because she had applied for her annual leave at work. She had just finished preparing a meal which she was ready to devour as her appetite for food was on a high level.

She dished out the well garnished vegetable soup on a small ceramic bowl. Then, she scooped some mound of pounded yet into another plate and proceeded to the dinning room.

She sat down, savouring the aroma of the food before starting to eat. She praised herself for being such a good cook, adding that she could win a top food competition without much ado. Her phone was on the dinning table, so she picked it up and started scrolling through some social media reels.

Few minutes later, the door to the entrance at the sitting room came open and she saw her husband, Danny saunter in, looking so haggard and sad.

She stared at him, surprised that he was home at that time of the day, which was so strange. "Darling, you're home." She said, a little awkwardly.

He nodded and sat down roughly on the cushion, then closing his eyes, his hands still clutching his suitcase.

Anna washed her hand and went over to sit down close to him. "Darling, are you alright? You look like you just carried the whole world on your shoulder. Besides that, you returned home too early today, what's happening? She asked.

He shook his head in disagreement. "Darling, I'm just tired. Had to take a day off from work today. I'm so tired and really hungry."

"Well, if that's the case, let's go upstairs so you can change and freshen up. I'll dish some food for you, I think you'll be better after that." She suggested.

He agreed with her and went upstairs, with her behind him, holding his suitcase. She dropped it in the wardrobe, prepared a warm bath for him before leaving for the kitchen.

By the time he was done with bathing, he joined her downstairs, at the dinning table. Taking some balls with soup into his mouth, his eyes widened in total shock and surprise. "Sweetheart, did you make this? He asked, still consuming the food with so much pleasure.

She nodded before answering. "Yes, I made it myself. How do you see it? Does it taste well? She asked.

He stared at her in disbelief. "Taste well? That's a big understatement. This food is the best I have ever eaten in my life! You made this so so we'll, I can't believe you can cook like this." He praised her.

She smiled sheepishly. "Well, are you saying this because you're hungry and you want more? She teased.

"No no no, I wouldn't do that. But to be honest, this is so delicious." He said again.

Anna allowed him to finish up with the food before bombarding him with questions. She knew her husband's business was quite hectic that he would hardly return home on time. It was only on very few occasions that he had returned early from work and early was at least 4pm. It was barely noon, yet he was back home. She knew something was wrong somewhere.

As soon as he was done eating, Anna cleared the plates from the table and washed them off. By the time she was through with what she had to do in the kitchen, she joined her husband who was now resting on the cushion in the sitting room.

She was becoming restless as she didn't know how to begin the conversation as she didn't want to sound suspicious to her husband. After waiting and seeing that her husband was not ready to engage first, she decided to open the floor.

"Uhm, Darling." She paused, braced herself and continued. "I want to know, why are you so home so early?

Danny sighed lightly. "it's a long story, but I'll tell you." He replied, letting out a noiseless sigh. "I hope you'll keep loving me." He thought.

"You're keeping me in suspense. Hope everything is alright darling? She pestered, now getting even more curious.

He shook a little before responding. "You know the business idea I told you about? She nodded affirmatively and he continued. "Well, I kinda pitched it. It worked, but all of a sudden I was sidelined."

She smiled, then tapped him on his shoulder. "Darling, is that all? Stuff like this happen at work almost daily. Just move on, more business ideas will come." She said, then was about to get up.

"That's not all." He blurted out sharply. "I was given a termination letter baby. I've been sacked from work." He said almost in a whisper, bowing his head on his palm.

         "What!
