CHAPTER SEVEN!
Danny returned home feeling so exhausted and fatigued. He had just finished another dose of job hunt which proved quite futile. He hadn't been in such situation and never believed he would ever be in such spot. He wondered why life was being too tough on him.
He freshened up, then headed to the kitchen to make something little. He prepared pasta with vegetable sauce, which he knew his wife would love. When he was done, he scooped a minute amount of food, took a bottle of drink and carried them to the room upstairs to eat.
It's been over a month since he lost his business or job and he had been using some savings to try to cater for the family, which hadn't been an easy task.
He felt like a burden seeing his wife take care of some bills he was supposed to be in charge of, which he had been doing with all ease. He was mused how the tides could change so quickly without giving him a chance to grip the boat.
He took some spoonful of the food and ate quietly, thinking of his next line of action. He deeply regretted using almost all his hard earned money to invest in the previous business deal, only to be cut off entirely from it.
It hurt him deeply as he thought about how much he had been of great impact which was eventually not recognized at the last.
He was somewhat glad that he and his wife weren't with a child yet, or he could have been in a more deeper soup, so he thought.
"How do I go about this? He conversed with no one in particular. "Anna's been working even harder now, how do I ease these burden. God please help me." He whispered, almost amidst tears.
He stared at the food he was eating and he noticed that he lost appetite. He stared at the wall clock, it was past six and he sighed.
He got up and went over to the window just to watch and maybe clear his head, then he saw something that struck him.
Some blocks away from the house which was still visible from the angle where he stood, he saw Anna come down from a car, having a man open the door for her, which he couldn't remember the last time he did. He shuddered like someone who was cold and all of a sudden he felt shivers run down his spine.
He decided not to overthink it, perhaps they were just colleagues, or maybe that wasn't her and he was only overreacting due to stress, he said to himself and dismissed the thoughts. Although, some part of him was scared that he might be in a tight position or even much deeper problem.
He took the food to the kitchen, disposed it and went back to the room. He lay down on the bed, his heart beating so fast, even though he tried to control his emotions.
His wife came back to the house after about forty minutes, by then it was past 7pm. Anna came into the room walking slowly like someone who was about to give up.
"Hi baby." She said as she dropped her bag on bed.
Danny pretended to be asleep, so he didn't respond to her greeting. She went over to him and kissed him on his forehead and he froze in even more fear.
He stirred from his fake sleep. "Oh, darling. You're back, welcome." He said calmly, rubbing his eyes to add to the pretense.
"Yeah, today was so stressful. We had quite a long day with numerous meetings. Our boss had to reward us by treating us with a good meal, in a restaurant a little close to the house." She explained, smiling hideously by herself.
"Oh, that hurt." He replied, staring at her with an expressionless look on his face.
"What? What hurts? She asked, confused.
He sighed lightly. "I mean, I made dinner already. I guess it'll pass for lunch for tomorrow then." He added.
"Oh that. Sorry, it wasn't intentional." She answered . "Don't worry, I'll take some to work so it doesn't go to waste, alright." She added
He just nodded, still staring at her. He waited for her to ask about his day, but she didn't. Perhaps, not yet time, he wondered.
"I'd just go freshen up and join you in a few minutes time."
Danny stared at her with mixed feelings as she hurried into the bathroom.
